A Children’s Place has been through a few changes over the past decades: expansions, contractions, and relocations, but it’s still pretty much the same as it was when Lynn Kelly and Jan Bruton started up in a small store front on Broadway in 1974. Just ask Lynn’s daughter, Kirsten. She remembers coming to A Children’s Place when she was a child and now she’s part of our stroller-pushing crowd, bringing her own twin daughters by to visit every once in a while. And we’re happy to say we’ve got a handful of other moms that come in from time to time and tell us they remember coming in with their mothers when they were kids.

Since the time that Lynn and Jan started out, the store has been through a couple of different owners and moved to its present location on Fremont St. in the Irvington neighborhood.

In 2003, the present owner, Pam Erlandson, bought the store and in 2015 moved it to its current location on lower Fremont.

When Pam decided what she wanted to be when she “grew up,” she knew that bringing kids and great books together would be her heart’s content. In 2003, with the opportunity to purchase ACP, her wish came true. Pam loves to promote literacy, engage with people about the shared wonder of books, and takes great satisfaction from helping parents and teachers “raise readers.” Kira is our resident book whiz. When you’re looking for those special and magical titles, she’ll gleefully share her latest favorites with you. Kira is one of our children’s book buyers and assists teachers and librarians in placing school orders. Kira thinks the only thing that is as much fun as reading children’s books is running in the rain on a forest trail in Portland. . .the best place in the world!
